Green Vanguard: National Chi Nan University Wins the 2023 TCSA Gold Award for University Sustainability Report with Innovative Practices

National Chi Nan University (NCNU) stood out in the 16th Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards (TCSA) 2023, winning the Gold Award for University Sustainability Reporting. This achievement signifies NCNU's innovative and practical strategies for green transformation and sustainable development, which are especially crucial in the face of global climate change and environmental challenges.

Over the past 11 years (2012-2022), NCNU's revenue increased annually from NT$1.133 billion to NT$1.413 billion, achieving substantial growth despite a declining birthrate. This success is closely linked to the university's ranking in multiple categories in the Times Higher Education 2022 World University Impact Rankings. Additionally, in the 2022 academic year, the number of international students reached 596, accounting for over 10% of the total student body, ranking 6th among national universities in Taiwan and highlighting NCNU's international reputation.

NCNU's achievements in sustainable infrastructure are particularly noteworthy. In 2022, NCNU ranked 44th in the GreenMetric World University Rankings, consistently in the top 50 globally for four years, with its 'Infrastructure' category ranking 2nd worldwide and leading among Taiwan's national comprehensive universities for seven consecutive years. After installing solar power generation, NCNU expects to generate 8.64 million watts (MW) annually, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 3,000 households, ranking first in Nantou County. NCNU plans to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2043, demonstrating a firm commitment to environmental protection. The university has a wastewater treatment plant and installed rainwater recycling systems in the Sports and Health Center and the female dormitories in 2020 and 2021, respectively, saving an average of 11,500 tons of water annually.

Beyond environmental sustainability, NCNU has made significant contributions to social responsibility. Through local initiatives and USR teams, the university assisted seven townships in Nantou County with regional revitalization projects, securing approximately NT$360.796 million in total subsidies. These efforts reflect NCNU's commitment to local communities and its tangible impact on regional revitalization and social responsibility.

Regarding governance, NCNU utilizes SWOT analysis to understand its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, guiding its strategic planning. President Wuu Dong-Sing emphasized that the publication of NCNU's Sustainability Report responds to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and demonstrates the university's continuous efforts in governance, sustainable environment, and social responsibility. NCNU will continue to nurture students with global perspectives and local action capabilities, contributing more significantly to societal progress and development. NCNU's achievement is a milestone in sustainable development and a firm commitment to future green transformation and innovative practices.
