The College of Humanities covers two major fields, that is, the humanities and social sciences, emphasizing the integration of the humanities and society, theory and practice. The college provides an educational environment for nurturing professionals and interdisciplinary talents with the goal of cultivating high-quality academic and industry talents for the country.

We aim at providing a learning environment that cultivates human resources equipped with both expertise and multidisciplinary competence, producing contributory asset to the academia and the industries. The prospects and the features of the college include:

• Department of Chinese Language and Literature

Academic Strengths

Among all university Chinese language departments in Taiwan, the faculties of NCNU's Department of Chinese Language and Literature have the top two success rates in receiving research grants awarded by the Ministry of Science and Technology. Students have the highest satisfaction with the teaching offered by the department. The curriculum has three focuses, that is, academic, creative, and practical aspects, and an established graduation production system. Students choose their careers according to their interests. Whether they pursue further studies or continue to create, there are diversified employment opportunities. Students are employed upon graduation.

Traditional Chinese language curriculum are guided by the principles of the art of prose, argumentation, and textual research. A fourth principle – that of literature – has been gaining traction in recent years. Taking in the four principles, contemporary interests, and the future development of Chinese language and literature, the academic objectives of this Department are:

1. Research Objectives: To cultivate talents for the future of Chinese language studies, and strengthen the foundations of this academic field.

2. Creative Objectives: To cultivate talents for Chinese-language literary creation across all genres, and contribute to the world's literary wealth.

3. Practical Objectives: To cultivate talents in editing, educational writing, creative writing, children's writing, and other practical applications of the Chinese language, so graduates can find gainful and meaningful employment through collective creation and literary services.

• Department of Southeast Asian Studies

Academic Strengths
The NCNU Department of Southeast Asian Studies is the only department in Taiwan that has a complete academic program, including bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs. NCNU is also the first university in Taiwan to establish a Southeast Asian research and teaching program. The curriculum is based on Southeast Asian politics, economy, society, and culture, coupled with Southeast Asian language courses. The department has cultivated countless competitive south-bound talents in both industries and academia. Therefore, anyone interested in Southeast Asian studies should come to NCNU.

The NCNU Department of Southeast Asian Studies is the first and only one of its kind in Taiwan to offer interdisciplinary programs dedicated to academic and practical studies in the political, economic, social, and cultural development of Southeast Asian nations. • Department of Foreign Languages and Literature

Academic Strengths

Through multi-language, cultural, and other related courses, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature opens the door for students to connect with the world, study abroad, and communicate with foreigners on various occasions. The department provides diversified support to help students pursue their dreams, such as becoming news anchors, pilots, professors, heads of institutions, and exploring other possibilities.

1. Courses are designed to strengthen communicating in, appreciation of, and thinking with a foreign language, and interpreting across different fields and cultures to truly translate ideas across languages.

2. Equal emphasis is placed on diversity, theory, and practice (including literature, linguistics, translation, and language teaching)

3. A wide range of foreign-language instruction programs (including Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Burmese, and several Southeast Asian languages).

The Department of History is characterized by its focus on the historical development of the gradual formation of the world system after the 15th century. Spatially, it focuses on the relationship between Taiwan, China (especially South China), and the world. The curriculum is organized in six fields closely related to Taiwan's social and cultural history and the history of world civilizations to train students to think outside the box and in multiple ways.

Timeline wise, a curricular emphasis on how human history unfolds starting from the 14th century and onwards.

Geographically wise, a curricular emphasis on the social, economic, and cultural development of Taiwan and China (especially the Huanan areas collectively known as South China) and their growing relations with the world.

Events wise, a curricular emphasis on Chinese marine history, Chinese overseas development and diaspora, the social and cultural development of Taiwan and China, Chinese economic history (especially from the Ming and Qing dynasties and onwards), and early civilizations and world history.

 

Career Prospects

Career paths include historic records editing, archive management, library management, museum management, news media, text editing, and teaching; or pursuing further academic studies.

 

• Department of Public Policy and Administration

Academic Strengths
Abiding by the "people-oriented" spirit, the Department of Public Policy and Administration aims to cultivate public administration and policy talents who have an international outlook, care about local issues, and are aware of the relevant theories and practices. The department trains students to be cross-disciplinary professionals, and such an approach meets the urgent needs of the current changing society. In addition to a wide range of subjects, the department also emphasizes training students to develop sensitivity to public affairs, independent thinking abilities in relation to issues, and good interpersonal skills. The department develops students' professional ability and multidimensional thinking skills so that students will have more diverse career options.

• Indigenous Culture Industry and Social Work Program for Undergraduate Indigenous Students

Academic Strengths
The Indigenous Culture Industry and Social Work Program integrates the professional learning at the university with the cultural knowledge resources of the indigenous tribes to pass on the knowledge about the indigenous peoples on campus and help students to practice what they have learned in the tribes. The program aims to cultivate culturally sensitive indigenous social workers and tribal cultural industry professionals and to encourage graduates to return to tribal areas.

The development of indigenous economy and tribal empowerment to secure the cultural inheritance of Taiwan's aboriginal communities has been a topic of growing importance in recent years. NCNU aims to assist indigenous youths who aspire to revitalize their communities by offering courses grounded in indigenous culture and history. Taking into account contemporary interests, professional skills, and practical knowledge, this program offers skill sets for three main fields – tourism, the creative industries, and social work.

1. Traditional and contemporary values

Courses are focused on aboriginal cultures and traditions, multidisciplinary knowledge and applications, community planning, tribal development, and the cultural economy.

2. Professional expertise

Courses are offered in methodological stages, with the first two years dedicated to foundational knowledge in aboriginal cultures, social work, tourism, and the creative industries. The latter two years are devoted to electives that help students apply their interests and pursue their career aspirations.

"The changes in society are not because some people did a lot, but because everyone did a little bit. " The mission of the Department of Social Policy and Social Work is to cultivate social work talents, promote positive changes in society through education and practical participation, and achieve love and justice.

Multidisciplinary, balanced development: The Department aims to nurture talents with broad perspectives, compassion, and practical knowledge who can contribute to societal growth and progress.

Skilled, specialized knowledge: The Department aims to nurture talents with comprehensive knowledge and understanding of their specialized fields. There are two main areas of study: (1) social work and management, and (2) domestic violence and abuse prevention.

Diversified, applied knowledge: The Department requires at least 250 hours of social service, volunteer work, and internship programs, as practical experience is the best channel for learning how to write proposals, interact with communities, and strengthen teamwork.

Interschool, transnational exchanges: The Department encourages students to partake in international symposiums and student-exchange programs with partner schools to broaden their academic and world knowledge.

• Graduate Institute of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language

Introduction

The Master's Program in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language focuses on teaching practice training based on foreign language teaching theories and skills, cultural awareness, technological ability, and conducting academic research on teaching practices. Recently, the program focused on the design and teaching methods of a professional Chinese curriculum, multidimensional learning models, and the development of the Chinese language education industry. • Master Program for Nonprofit Organization Management

Introduction

Every non-profit organization (NPO) has its own missions and needs to promote more professionals, resources, and partners to work together towards common goals and values. The Master's Program in Non-Profit Organization Management invites partners who are interested in social welfare to learn together to achieve excellence and influence influential people! The Master Program for Nonprofit Organization (NPO) Management, National Chi-nan University, was established in August 2013. Our objectives are as followed: (1) to cultivate specialists for managing nonprofit organizations; (2) to conduct NPO academic research and industry-university cooperation; (3) to exploit NPO international academic cooperation and practical exchange for students; and (4) to construct government- business-community partnership. The teaching staffs consist of teachers of humanities and business colleges of the university and top managers of NPOs. We recruit 27 new students a year. They are mainly practitioners of various NPOs, and few civic servants and industrial workers. The Program is intended to create an exchange platform for those students from various sectors.

• Master Program of Long-Term Care Management (2019)

Introduction

In the field of long-term care, the balance between public welfare and profit could be a challenge. Thus, how to innovate, start a business, create value, and consider both the business and the mission requires knowledge, wisdom, vision, and more importantly, the insistence on value and quality. This program establishes a cross-disciplinary platform, connects like-minded allies, adheres to the goals, and jointly develops a new model for long-term care! The Master Program for Long-term Care (LTC) Management, National Chi-nan University, was established in August 2020. Our objectives are as followed: (1) to cultivate specialists for managing long-term care organizations; (2) to conduct LTC academic research and industry-university cooperation; (3) to exploit LTC international academic cooperation and practical exchange for students; and (4) to construct government- business-community partnership. The teaching staffs consist of teachers of humanities and business colleges of the university and top managers of LTC organizations. We recruit 28 new students a year. They are mainly practitioners of various long-term care organizations, and few civic servants and industrial workers. The Program is intended to create an exchange platform for those students from various sectors.
